National Citizen Service, powered by Essex County Council

Essex County Council is currently recruiting Team Leaders and Youth Support Workers to deliver this summer’s National Citizen Service (NCS) for young people from across Essex.

NCS is an exciting national programme that brings together young people from diverse backgrounds, providing them with strong skills for life, work, and adulthood.

It will be a mix of residential work and community projects in the local area. Essex County Council Youth Service deliver the programme to young people who live in Brentwood, Uttlesford, Braintree, Colchester, Tendring, Castle Point, Rochford and Maldon.

We are looking for enthusiastic and dynamic individuals who can motivate others and use their skills to add variety and passion to the programme.

What is the National Citizen Service?

The National Citizen Service (NCS) is a government-backed programme which brings together young people from diverse backgrounds, providing them with strong skills for life, work, and adulthood.

NCS gives 16 and 17 year-olds the chance to embark on exhilarating challenges, make a mark on their local community and build skills for work and life.

Participants get the chance to take part in adrenaline-fuelled challenges like rock climbing, canoeing, hiking and archery; skill building exercises that encourage the development of confidence, team working and communication and finally a social action project designed to benefit their local area.

Why should you help deliver this programme?

These internships offer a fantastic way to improve your CV over the summer. If you see your future in teaching or youth work then supporting this programme will offer you invaluable experience, but even if not, these opportunities still offer you to chance to develop vital employability skills such as leadership, communication, organisation and much more.

What do our staff members say?

“The opportunity to work with young people ignited a desire in me to see the next generation supported and encouraged as much as possible, especially during their crucial teenage years. I have personally experienced a lot of joy from being a team leader on the programme as it has enabled me to see young people push themselves to grow in strength they didn’t know they had and discover their talents and potential. It’s very rewarding and I would encourage anyone to be on a staff team because you don’t know the positive influence you could have on young people and be their catalyst to realising that there is a better future out there for them if they work hard and dream big.”

“Choosing to work on NCS in the summer allowed me to support my teacher training applications with real life examples of how I worked with and supported a group of young people.  I’m now on a teacher training course but can’t wait to come back and be a member of staff again next year!”

What do our young people say?

“NCS is one of the best things I’ve ever done. I’ve met so many new people and my confidence has improved so much.”

“NCS has not only changed the community but it changed my outlook on society as a whole; this benefits me in a way that it gave me a wider knowledge and understanding.”

“I’ve enjoyed raising awareness of an important issue, meeting new people and growing in confidence.”
