The fascinating field of digital forensics – Beth

Beth is an English Literature graduate from the University of Edinburgh. She has recently completed a graduate business internship at Create Intelligence, a specialist provider of data-analytics solutions to law enforcement, government, and defence agencies.

Originally Create came to Step to find an intern to help out with product testing and training coordination. Beth was selected not only because of her excellent academic record but due to the extracurricular interest in coding, in particular for her work with the charity Code First: Girls

My Step internship at Create Intelligence has been a brilliant opportunity to gain business and technical experience in the fascinating field of digital forensics. From day one, I was given a high level of responsibility and was immediately welcomed into the team.

I was given the opportunity to learn how to cleanse and analyse complex data sets using Chorus, the company’s data analysis software. Chorus can handle up to 10 million records and can help provide analysts with critical intelligence up to 40 times faster than using manual processes alone, so it was very interesting software to work with.

After gaining an understanding of how to use Chorus to analyse data sets that included call data records, ANPR, and financial transactions, I was able to undertake software testing and help the development team assist analysts from the organisations and law enforcement agencies that use Chorus. The function and outputs of Chorus evolve regularly because the team continually develop it according to the users’ needs; this creates a really dynamic working environment in the company.

Alongside the opportunities I was given to develop a wealth of technical skills, I enjoyed working with colleagues in a wide range of business areas including marketing, logistics, office management, and research. Getting the chance to attend the International Communications Data and Digital Forensics Conference and helping to coordinate the successful installation of Chorus for organisations across the UK were particular highlights.

I have truly enjoyed my experience and I would like to thank the Step team, particularly Tamsin, and everyone at Create Intelligence for this brilliant opportunity.
