What students and new graduates can do for you.

A question we are often asked here at Step is “what can students and graduates actually do?” It’s a good question as it’s not always apparent from their actual course of study. Many of our internships have completed valuable and substantial projects; below are just some examples showing the breadth and diversity of what Step interns and placement students have undertaken and achieved, primarily in a small business setting.

Business Process Analyst

A small specialist design company required a full policy and procedural manual to be developed  for use by both internal staff and for any external audit requirements. A Step intern liaised with all internal departments including IT and individual employees to collate information on work flows and policies. They then reviewed the information to identify areas of improvement and a company policy and procedural manual was produced.

Accessories & Parts Management Co-ordinator

A global provider of electronic test equipment to the aerospace, defence, automotive, telecommunications and general electronics sectors used a Step internship to trial a graduate for a new role in their logistics department. The key duties related to receiving, cataloguing and despatching a wide range of consumables and implementing effective stock management processes. Following the successful trial, the internship translated into a new permanent graduate role.

Analytics Intern

A digital media agency providing market-leading data solutions for their clients took on a penultimate year maths undergraduate to support their analytics team.  Using a range of business intelligence software and analytics packages she worked on analysing media data to provide insights and performance information. Having established the relationship, she is likely to join them in a permanent position on graduation this year.

Growth and Neighbourhoods Research Project

A City Council ran a research project focusing on work to support the city’s residential growth objectives to maximise the potential of the bordering neighbourhoods. The purpose of the project was to identify opportunities where it could be possible to provide a residential offer which meets the needs of both new and existing residents. Two Step interns played a key role in undertaking the research and presenting the findings.

Graduate Mechanical Design Graduate Internship

A business that designs and manufactures automation and materials handling equipment for a wide range of sectors, including automotive, beverage, food, e-commerce and manufacture, uses Step to provide interns to join their integrated design team.  Following the 12-week graduate trial period, successful interns are then offered permanent roles with the company.

Junior Digital Strategist

A leading advertising agency took on a new graduate for a summer internship to support their digital management services. Activities ranged from research and competitor analysis, digital strategy planning and management, client and community management. The summer internship was extended into a fixed term contract to meet a short-term resource need.

Ecology Technician

A land and vegetation management contractor in Kent wanted to recruit an ecologist to work on their railtrack projects. We sourced an environmental graduate with the appropriate CIEEM membership on our new ‘graduate trial’ internship. She is now their permanent ecologist and recruited another Step student to work with her.

Data Migration Project

A family-run confidential waste and document storage company in Nottingham needed to migrate data to a new IT system. Step sourced an undergraduate summer intern who completed the initial project and then reviewed their logistics schedule, saving them money on their fuel bills.

Design Technician Internship

A Kent based specialist fit out contractor used Step’s services to source an architecture graduate and then an interior design graduate. Based in the design team, the Step interns worked to client briefs to optimise production lifecycles. Both Step interns are now on permanent graduate contracts.

Business Development Coordinator

An award winning London based importer of gourmet coffees took on two Step graduate interns to assist the company with expanding their brand to new e-marketplaces in the USA and Asia.

Graduate Assistant Category Manager

A trade supplier of solar consumer products in Oxfordshire took on an International Business graduate as a Step intern. She worked with the product development team, providing the vital link between their supply chain and sales teams.
