A career in Purchasing / Buying is something that you may not have considered. Essentially, in this instance, it's about identifying the suppliers of raw materials needed to manufacture a range of products, then obtaining the raw materials through negotiation and agreement with suppliers. It's not always about getting the best price though, as other factors such as quality and speed of service need to be taken into account.
Handicare is a global company with sales in more than 20 countries; they are committed to providing safe and reliable equipment for people with reduced mobility.
Their UK offices are located in a town to the west of Dudley, in the West Midlands (not too far from Birmingham and Wolverhampton). They have a proud record of taking on and developing students and graduates, and are now looking to add two sandwich placement students to their Global Group Purchasing team.
The Group Purchasing team conducts centralised sourcing activities for all strategic business units within the group. In this role you will be a key member of the team, and will learn about (and get direct experience with) a lot of the key aspects involved in purchasing, including:
• Collecting and analysing data on regional and global suppliers and raw material pricing.
• Cost modelling
• Sending RFI’s (Request for information) and RFQ’s (Request for quotation) to suppliers, and preparing the results for Buyer decision
• Participating in contract supplier negotiations
• Supporting buyers in the procurement function and general administration
• Assisting in Purchasing projects and other duties as required
(don't worry if not all of the above is familiar, as training is provided)
There may even be some international travel.
A bit about you….
You will currently be studying for a degree level qualification in a Business related course, ideally with Purchasing or Buying modules. Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint skills are required, together with the ability to learn new systems quickly.
Some of the essential skills for the role include: attention to detail, negotiation, initiative, creativity, an ability to keep to deadlines, excellent communication skills both verbal and written, data analysis and organisation.
We appreciate that as an undergraduate you will not have had the opportunity to demonstrate these skills to a great extent- but it’s all relative, and in comparison to the other undergraduates who are applying. There will be a lot of interest in this opportunity, so be ready to show evidence of your interest in developing a career in Buying / Purchasing, and where you fit the criteria, as this is how applications will be assessed.
Start date will be around early to mid-July and the role will last for a year.
