The question we are most often asked here at Step is “what can students and grads actually do?” It’s a good question as it’s not always apparent from their actual course of study. We have a growing community of enterprising students and graduates actively seeking out opportunities in smaller high potential businesses and here is our Top 10 from 2014 showing the breadth and diversity of what they have undertaken and achieved in a small business setting.
Website Management and Promotion Project
We sourced a marketing intern to join an environmental, industrial and marine precision engineering specialist in Hereford. She completed competitor research to enhance their web content and has successfully launched the new product website on schedule.
Production Optimisation Internship
A life science company in Essex that develops and sells instruments, consumables and services for liquid samples took on an engineering intern through Step for a summer project. He reviewed their manufacturing systems to optimise production and is still working for them part time on his return to university.
A land and vegetation management contractor in Kent wanted to recruit an ecologist to work on their railtrack projects. We sourced an environmental graduate with the appropriate CIEEM membership on our new ‘graduate trial’ internship. She is now their permanent ecologist and has another Step student working with her.
Project Management Intern
A Southampton based systems, software and data engineering company have taken on a Step graduate for a project management internship. This internship is still ongoing, with the graduate successfully supporting the project management team.
An IT consultancy in Wetherby required a recent graduate to support their ambitious growth plans through developing a new marketing strategy. The Step intern was responsible for creating direct mail campaigns, collecting and copywriting case studies and writing press releases.
Graduate Engineer Internship
A North East engineering information management company wanted to source a high performing graduate through our new Step ‘graduate trial’ programme to assist with reviewing all aspects of their information systems. Step sourced a graduate intern, who successfully completed the initial 12 week project and is now with the company permanently.
Data Migration Project
A family-run confidential waste and document storage company in Nottingham needed to migrate data to a new IT system. Step sourced an undergraduate summer intern who completed the initial project and then reviewed their logistics schedule, saving them money on their fuel bills.
Design Technician Internship
A Kent based specialist fit out contractor used Step’s services to source an architecture graduate and then an interior design graduate. Based in the design team, the Step interns work to client briefs to optimise production lifecycles. Both Step interns are now on permanent graduate contracts.
Business Development Coordinator
An award winning London based importer of gourmet coffees took on two Step graduate interns to assist the company with expanding their brand to new e-marketplaces in the USA and Asia. One internship is ongoing and in discussions for possible employment after the placement.
Graduate Assistant Category Manager
A trade supplier of solar consumer products in Oxfordshire took on an International Business graduate as a Step intern. She is working with the product development team, providing the vital link between their supply chain and sales teams.
