Aravind Ashok pursued a master’s degree in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering with Industrial Practice at the University of Greenwich, aiming to gain industrial experience through a placement. He successfully secured a placement as a Production Engineer at Wozair Limited.
Wozair specialises in the design and manufacture of high integrity heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment for offshore oil and gas, nuclear, marine, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, process and energy sectors. Wozair design and produce airflow systems & ventilation for a range of clients that are usually bespoke and for commercial use.
Aravind started his job search by refining his CV to match his previous experience, particularly in HVAC engineering, and utilising LinkedIn. The process from job search to placement secured took about one and a half months.
Step, a resource contracted by the university played a crucial role by shortlisting his CV for potential employers and aiding with documents and job-related queries.
During his placement at Wozair, he was responsible for managing raw materials, verifying project specifications, and ensuring manufacturing processes ran smoothly.
Throughout his placement, Aravind’s university modules-Advanced Principles in Lean Manufacturing and Strategy & Management “helped very well” in handling his responsibilities at Wozair effectively.
At the start of his placement, language barrier was a challenge for Aravind as an international student which was impacting his communication with colleagues. To overcome this obstacle, here is what he did,
“I watched English movies without subtitles to understand what they are saying and how to pronounce the words”
Aravind enjoyed learning from his experienced colleagues and appreciated their support and encouragement, fostering a positive work environment. He found the industrial practice experience on the manufacturing floor more beneficial following the knowledge gained in lectures at the university.
Aravind’s dedication and excellent performance during his placement led to a visa sponsored permanent position at Wozair Ltd.
