Placement Secured at the First Application? Yes, it is possible!

Rounak Manoj, a graduate of the University of Greenwich, studied a Masters in Food Innovation with Industrial Practice and completed a placement with Pieminister at their Bristol production site.

Pieminister is an award-winning, multi-channel business, that develops sustainably made pies (and other products) for Pieminister’s own restaurants and cafes, as well as leading

supermarkets, independent retailers, and delis, with locations around the UK.

Rounak’s journey began with Step informing him of an opening at Pieminister. Despite being in Kent, he readily accepted the opportunity, demonstrating his flexibility and eagerness to seize the opportunity. Without applying elsewhere, Rounak secured the placement after a successful interview process, highlighting the efficiency and effectiveness of the collaboration between Step Recruitment and the University of Greenwich.

Initially starting as a Quality Assistant, Rounak was promoted to Junior Stock Controller after six months. His day-to-day responsibilities involved tasks such as stock management, quality assurance, and meat traceability, where he applied theoretical knowledge gained from his taught year.

Rounak applied Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) learnt in the Food Product & Process Development and Food Authenticity and Traceability module during his role, highlighting the practical value of his master’s degree from the University of Greenwich in preparing him for the workforce.

While Rounak encountered challenges, particularly in meat traceability, his perseverance and familiarity with the role enabled him to navigate through obstacles effectively. Over time, he developed a deep understanding of the details involved, showcasing personal and professional growth during his placement.

Rounak’s placement at Pieminister met the expectations he had when he set out to complete a master’s degree and seek placement opportunities. He was grateful for the supportive work environment coupled with valuable mentorship, “I was happy to secure a placement such as this, Pieminister was a perfect place to work”.

With his placement year concluded, Rounak is set on securing a graduate visa to continue his journey with Pieminister.

Reflecting on his journey, Rounak’s advice to current and incoming University of Greenwich students that are or will be in a similar position, is to persevere and not to be discouraged by challenges in looking for a placement.

Rounak Manoj’s experience exemplifies the collaborative efforts of University of Greenwich and Step Recruitment in providing students with enriching placement opportunities. His journey underscores the importance of seizing opportunities, leveraging academic knowledge in practical settings, and embracing challenges as avenues for growth. Through strategic partnerships and student-centric initiatives, institutions can continue to empower students like Rounak on their path to success.
