Our guest blog is written by Alice Death, a Marketing student from the University of Reading, who recently completed a recruitment placement via Step at Aquent; a recruitment agency specialising in a wide range of Marketing jobs across the UK.

Wow- what a 12 weeks it has been. I can’t believe how quickly this internship has gone. I remember being interviewed on the phone by Step and now I am coming into my final weeks at Aquent! Firstly, I would like to express that before this process the world of ‘Recruitment’ to me was one big black hole, I didn’t really have a clue what it entailed and if it was a career path I would ever consider. Thankfully after almost three months at Aquent, I would like to think I now understand a lot more about the recruitment industry and its advantages. Step matched me perfectly with Aquent and I was selected for an interview. After stepping into their office I knew immediately this was the place for me. Bean bags, TV, Xbox, football table, amazing coffee machine…what else could I possibly need? After a successful interview I was raring to go!

I was welcomed warmly by the team and quickly settled in, yes there was a lot to pick up, especially as Aquent recruit in the creative industry. They almost have a language of their own. Picking up the creative lingo was interesting and I would like to think that by the time I finish I may almost be fluent! Picking up the phone and talking to my first candidate was nerve-racking, but I had to reassure myself, what’s the worst that can happen?- it’s not as if they can bite my head off! Thankfully Aquent’s talent pool are a lovely bunch of chatty enthusiasts and are a delight to talk to. It’s amazing how much confidence I have gained from this experience, I feel as if I can talk to all different types of people from many walks of life which will greatly help me when I graduate and am released into the real world of work.

If you are a student considering this process do not be apprehensive about it taking up 3 months of your summer break. I have had one of my most memorable summers at Aquent; met a most remarkable bunch of people who have me in constant fits of laughter and have a never ending supply of chocolate/cookies/muffins and doughnuts!

If the food doesn’t sell it for you then I hope that the valuable skills you gain from this process does. It’s now second nature to me to identify the difference between a strong and a weak candidate, hopefully I can put these skills into practice making myself an attractive candidate for future employers. I am proud to put this experience on my CV and very fortunate to have had this opportunity. In today’s world the skills and experience you possess are crucial in making you a desirable candidate and this internship ticks a lot of valuable skills.

If you are like me and change your mind weekly about your future career path, then this internship is for you; I cannot stress enough how important the skills I’ve learnt are and cannot wait to put them into practice in my future career.
