Leon Pinnock: ‘No Mean Feat’

Leon Pinnock, a business studies graduate from Leeds Metropolitan University undertook an eight week placement at Silicone Engineering Ltd, a silicone manufacturer that supplies to a variety of industry sectors. The outcome of Leon’s project was to work alongside line managers contributing to the first step in the implementation of new performance management systems. This involved liaising with Departmental Managers to enforce the key performance indicators for their department. Leon’s placement is reviewed below:

The placement has outlined the foundations of the performance management system that the business intends to implement next year. Leon approached the project with a tenacious attitude ensuring that deadlines were met. He helped implement objectives for each department so that all employees now understand what is expected from them by updating job descriptions and outlining responsibilities. He used excel to chart the progress of the project and was commended for his excellent time keeping skills, often putting in extra time and effort as was required.

The project was a challenge especially when working around managers’ timeframes, with the company describing the project being completed on time as ‘no mean feat!’ Leon was open to feedback and this enabled him to enhance his writing skills and alter his style to specific company needs.

He was described as professional and friendly from managers across the organisation, building relationships with not only those that he had direct contact with. His approach showed that his creativity and enthusiasm developed him as an asset to the company.

Leon put into practice the theory that he had studied at university, stating that the high points of his placement were all of his project related work. Not only did he gain essential experience which has helped enhance his skills, but he had the opportunity to do something that he has passion for.

This goes to show that highlighting specific objectives of a project from the start can help not only in time keeping but in ensuring that a project is completed. Being complemented on applying extra effort, taking on board feedback and ensuring that deadlines are met are all aspects that will make an intern excel and stand out.

Well done Leon!
