The Importance of Engagement and Attendance: How Praful Excelled in His Placement

Praful’s engagement with Step and perfect workshop attendance was one of the factors that played a major role in him securing a placement and excelling at it. Step supported in building his CV, Cover Letter and Shared job opportunities.

Praful started his placement search in August 2021 and got the job in November of the same year.

This is the process he followed for the placement search:

Flow Chart

He also searched on Indeed, LinkedIn and applied to jobs shared by Step.

His application to a step-managed job, secured him the role as a Quality Controller working in the Technical Department at Crussh Fit Food and Juice Bars. Working in the technical department, he was involved in inspecting the whole sites, raising nonconformities, communicating with suppliers regarding the raw materials, checking raw material specifications and investigating customer complaints.

As a Food Innovation with Industrial Practice master’s student, the two modules that helped him succeed at his role were the HACCAP level 3 training which was very beneficial because he had to make the HACCAP plan and Food Management which gave him insight to food safety and quality management.

He communicated with his line manager about wanting to be a part of the HACCAP team. His manager made him a part of the team, giving him the opportunity to create a HACCAP process flow diagram for Crussh, which the company still uses. This saved the company money because they previously outsourced this task.

The most challenging aspect of his job was traceability, but his desire to learn drove him to seeking help from his colleagues and line manager. As a result, his manager also gave him training on BRC standards.

“When looking for a placement, the salary amount should not be the first factor, focus on entering the industry and gaining experience”- Praful
